Discovery channel ran a documentary on the Man-eaters of India in Sundarbans and it was the most heart-wrenching piece of documentary I saw and one that related to my country—India. The tigers in the Sundarbans have taken human beings there for granted.
Personally I love animals and I abhor any kind of harm that befalls animals especially tigers. When it comes to tigers I share my view with Jim Corbett who proclaimed that they are the most magnificent and the most beautiful animals that god ever created and it is my personal opinion.
I have always known that human beings are the best form of all the living beings. We think rationally and when it comes to saving something our priority should always be our own race first.
The paths of human beings and animals have always crossed and mostly it has always been the animals who have borne the brunt of it. Absurd as it may seem I have always felt that animals do not have any right to hurt any human being. It is absurd because it is the human beings who put themselves in the dangers path.
In this particular case the human beings are being butchered because their livelihood (fishing and honey collecting) takes them deep into the tigers’ territory. One particular incident in the documentary showed a single tiger had killed three people in one encounter. Though the government and the forest officials are taking some effort to warn the people from going into the tiger’s territory obviously it is not enough.
There should be some way of providing an alternate way of livelihood and educate these villagers. The responsibility of protecting these human beings should be shouldered by the rich people of the country so that they can provide an alternate way of livelihood for these villagers and one which the villagers can embrace.
Save the tiger project is good but I think our first responsibility lies towards our fellow human beings. The documentary was initially aired in 2005 and I pray to god that no more villagers have become tiger’s food and something has been done for these old fashioned villagers since then.
